What is Incurin?

Incurin tablets contain a low dose of female hormone. (Actually 1mg of estriol, a type of oestrogen.)

What is the Incurin Dose Rate?

There is a dose range which is used as the initial guide by your vet, but then adjusted afterwards according to effect. Initially the dose is one tablet per day, regardless of the size of the dog. If this works well, then the tablets can be halved, or given every other day. If this still works, then this dose can be maintained for the rest of the bitch's life. If this does not work, then the dose can be doubled. The minimum dose advised to be used is 0.5mg per dog per day. The maximum dose is 2mg per dog per day. If two tablets per day are not fully effective, an different medication can be tried is sometimes used (usually the drug phenylpropanolimine). In more severe cases, the two medications can be used together, working in different ways to resolve the incontinence.

How does Incurin work?

Incurin acts on receptors in the lining of parts of the urethra and the exit to the bladder.  After a bitch has been spayed (neutered), the hormonal environment in the body is changed slightly. This can sometimes have an effect over a period of time, resulting in difficulty in retaining urine in the bladder when the bitch is relaxed and at rest. This can mean that urine leaks out when the bitch is sleeping. This can result in anything from a small wet patch, to a totally soaking wet bed. Medically this condition is known as "sphincter mechanism incontinence". It can happen a long time after the bitch has been spayed, sometimes many years. Usually it happens intermittently at first, but gradually becomes more frequent and pronounced. Incurin usually works quite quickly to resolve the incontinence.

What are the Incurin Side Effects?

Incurin contains and oestrogen, and oestrogens have wide ranging effects on the body. At the low dose rates used in this treatment, these are so mild that they are not noticed. However in some bitches, they can be more obvious. They can cause mild signs as if the bitch was coming into season. The vulva can swell, there might be a slight discharge, and males will be attracted to the bitch. There can be slight swelling of the mammary glands, and possibly vomiting. These signs should all soon disappear completely if medication is withdrawn. Occasionally some hair loss can be seen after extended use. Incurin should be used in spayed (ovariohysterectomised ) bitches only. It is not intended for animals less than one year old, or for pregnant or lactating bitches. It is unlikely to be effective in bitches with abnormally large thirst and urine production (polydipsia and polyuria) which should be investigated and treated accordingly.
It is important not to overdose Incurin for long periods, because the stimulant effect on the mammary glands could have an effect on mammary tumours, or possibly on the bone marrow causing anaemia.
Most bitches which have been spayed do not develop incontinence. For those that do, Incurin at an appropriate dose provides a safe, neat and effective treatment, and many vets consider it to be the treatment of choice.
